Sebald impartia classes sobre <strong>Joseph Roth<\/strong>, un dels seus escriptors preferits. No \u00e9s estrany, doncs, que <strong>en l\u2019obra de Sebald ressoni la veu de Roth<\/strong>. El millor en aquests casos \u00e9s exemplificar-ho: a <em>Beichte eines morders<\/em> (\u2018Confessi\u00f3 d\u2019un assass\u00ed\u2019), llibre que Roth va publicar el 1936, el narrador de la hist\u00f2ria fa la consideraci\u00f3 seg\u00fcent sobre el temps:<\/p>\n<p>\u00abCom que el rellotge de la paret del restaurant s\u2019havia aturat i, tanmateix, nosaltres li llan\u00e7\u00e0vem mirades furtives tot i saber que no funcionava, ens va semblar que el temps s\u2019havia extingit, i les busques no nom\u00e9s es veien negres damunt l\u2019esfera blanca, sin\u00f3 fins i tot ombr\u00edvoles. S\u00ed, ombr\u00edvoles com l\u2019eternitat, insistents en llur immobilisme tossut i gaireb\u00e9 infame; i ens va fer l\u2019efecte que no es movien, no perqu\u00e8 el rellotge estigu\u00e9s aturat, sin\u00f3 perqu\u00e8 obe\u00efen una consigna p\u00e8rfida, com si ens volgu\u00e9s demostrar que la hist\u00f2ria que Golubtxic ens estava explicant era eternament v\u00e0lida i desconsoladora, al marge ja del temps i de l\u2019espai, del dia i de la nit. I de la mateixa manera que el temps s\u2019havia aturat, l\u2019espai en qu\u00e8 ens trob\u00e0vem tamb\u00e9 estava en certa manera lliure de totes les seves lleis espacials; i era com si estigu\u00e9ssim trepitjant no pas terra ferma, sin\u00f3 les aig\u00fces eternament ondulades del mar etern. Ens va semblar que \u00e9rem en un vaixell. I que el nostre mar era la nit.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>I a <em>Austerlitz<\/em>, la reflexi\u00f3 \u00e9s aquesta:<\/p>\n<p>\u00abEls rellotges m\u2019han semblat sempre objectes rid\u00edculs, essencialment mentiders, potser perqu\u00e8, seguint un impuls \u00edntim que no he ent\u00e8s mai, m\u2019he resistit sempre al poder del temps i m\u2019he excl\u00f2s de l\u2019anomenada actualitat, amb l\u2019esperan\u00e7a, tal com ho veig ara, va dir l\u2019Austerlitz, que el temps no pass\u00e9s, que no hagu\u00e9s passat, que li pogu\u00e9s anar al darrere, que tot fos com era abans o, m\u00e9s ben dit, que tots els moments coexistissin simult\u00e0niament, o sigui, que res del que explica la hist\u00f2ria fos veritat, que els fets ocorreguts no s\u2019haguessin esdevingut encara, sin\u00f3 que s\u2019acomplissin just quan hi pensem. [&#8230;] Si hem de ser francs, va dir l\u2019Austerlitz al cap d\u2019una estona, la relaci\u00f3 entre l\u2019espai i el temps, tal com l\u2019experimentem quan viatgem, encara conserva un cert car\u00e0cter il\u00b7lusori i il\u00b7lusionista, i \u00e9s per aix\u00f2 que, quan tornem d\u2019algun lloc, no sabem mai si, de fet, n\u2019hem arribat a marxar.
